Train Wrecks badge of courage

A football team without a crest?

It seemed kind of odd that the Train Wrecks have been developing their team history without an identity other than the colorful personalities that dot the field when we play. Well look no further, we have a badge....honoring the team's history and personality. Introducing.....

The design is modern interpretation of art deco locomotives and honors the establishment of the Train Wrecks Football Club in 2003.

I'm currently looking at providing some cost options for apparel (t-shirts and sweat shirts) for those who are interested. I'll float out an order form with size and style options once I get more information from a vendor.

A huge thanks to Wayne Keefe designing the badge!

Let us know what you think in the comments section and let us know if you would have general interest in ordering Train Wrecks apparel for you, your family, or friends.

Indoor Rec. Division Game

Where: The Bladium @ PK Bocas Locas

I'm not sure if the Train Wrecks have an arch-rival...or whether it's really to have rivals at the recreational level. But, I think if there ever was one for us, the orange person's of Bocas Locas comes close.

Five alive: Indoor team winning continues

The indoor Train Wrecks continued their winning ways to the new season. Avenging a thrashing at the hands of Bocas Locas last season, the 'Wrecks eeked out a 5-4 victory.

In truth the Train Wrecks led comfortably for most of the game, and only uncomforably in the last minute when a two-pointer got by the 'Wrecks defensive effort. The spa-like conditions in the bladium seemed to have taken a toll on the team towards the end, but there was enough sweat left in the tank to get the victory.

Next game: @ Dark Horses Tuesday, June 17, 7 pm.

Lost marbels

The marbels were taken by Inter.

In the outdoor season finale the Train Wrecks put in a good overall effort but had too much to overcome after three first-half goals led to their 3-0 defeat to regular season champs Inter.

The opponents played a good game and put the pressure on early in the first half using the width of the field and team passing. The opening score came after a steal in the defensive end with their striker showing some able feet in getting past the defensive.

Their other two goals relied much less on skill and a little more on luck. In all fairness it wasn't a fitting scoreline to Andrew's net minding. Inter does however deserver credit, as they played a solid defensive game to compliment and protect their lead.

The Train Wrecks can take some comfort in improving their second half game. The women played valiantly as this game's fab five put in a good performance with no substitutes available to them. And a special boost was provided from the sidelines by a good contingent of 'Wreck fans, including the ever-inspiring presence of Bob.

Congrats to Inter. Congrats to the Train Wrecks for a fine season.

Marbels for the taking: Championship weekend

Indoor Rec. Division Game
No game this Friday, June 6. Next game:
Where:
The Bladium vs. Bocas Locas
When: Tuesday, June 10 Time: 7 p.m.

A win would give the Train Wrecks a winning streak and help avenge an 11-2 loss to Bocas Locas last season.

Practice
Where: Alameda Point (Atlantic fields have been occupied and will continue to be)
When: Saturday, June 7 Time: 3 p.m.
note:
Carlos Marin has been cleared to play goalie in place of Blair for the outdoor finals. I believe Carlos will be at practice to take your best shots in preparation for Sunday's game.

At least 4 responses for participating are needed to hold practice.

Outdoor League Championship Game
Where: Gabe East @ Inter
When: Sunday, June 16 Time: 5 p.m. After-game host: Steve and Andrew
The number one seed versus the number two seed for all the marbels. The outdoor team can avenge an early loss as well, having gone down to Inter earlier in the regular season, 4-1. Laura, Thomas, Celina, Ali, Wendy, and Blair are out. Carlos Marin is available at the keeper spot. Brad is bringing his bionic leg this week again.

Participation for official games and Saturday practice can be captured in the poll to the right. You can also leave your thoughts in the comments section.

One foot in to a new season, the other in the finals

Indoor results
The Train Wrecks indoor team started a new season in style, racking up 10 points in a four goal victory over Bedlam. A full squad with some new but familiar faces led comfortably throughout the affair.

Robert Keller, old 'Wreck and new father, christened his return to football by claiming to be out of breath. Somehow it didn't stop him from looking like his in-form self as he contributed a goal and timely defense for some faithful fans. Monica chipped in a pair as well, filling in for Laura...and it was good to see Thomas get in on the indoor action.

Even Madelyn contributed to the Train Wrecks victory...despite donning the colors of the other team. Once a Train Wreck, always a Train Wreck. Foreva'.

Next up for the 'Wrecks is Bocas Locas June 10.

Outdoor results
The outdoor league entered the playoff season with the top four teams all in action and a chance to lay claim the championship. The semi-finals contest between the second-seeded Train Wrecks and the third-seeded Booty Booty, would determine who Inter would play in the finals next Sunday. Inter won the first semi-final match played on Friday.

The second semifinal had the pinnings for a dramatic tie. The 'Wrecks and double Booty were equal on points in the regulars season with the 'Wrecks owning the head-to-head series. But that slight advantage had little importance. With an appearance in the finals on the line for the opponent and team leaders Thomas and Laura not available the Train Wrecks had their work cut out for them.

And work it was. After the end of the first period, the scoreline reflected poor finishing on both ends as the ball failed to find the back of the net. In the end it would be something Booty Booty would rue as they had the wind to their backs and the majority of the opportunities in the opening half.

Perhaps learning from the missed chances of their opponent, the Train Wrecks capitalized with the wind and persistence. It paid off when Brad laced a shot into the upper corner of the net.

Team passing and a dominated midfield made it an easier effort for the back line, and eventually the 'Wrecks would build a two-goal lead with second half substitute Diego's low finish.

By the time Booty Booty lucked into their one goal, the Train Wrecks were all but penciled in for the finals. The game finished just three minutes later with the Train Wrecks on top, 2-1.

Next up for the 'Wrecks are the finals against Inter, June 8 at 5 pm.

Winning one for the Gippers

Indoor Rec. Division Game (updated)
Where: The Bladium vs. Bedlam
When: Friday, May 30 Time: 6 p.m.

A new season starts this Friday at 6 pm. Monica will guest star in place of Laura.

Practice
Where: Atlantic fields (if available, otherwise go to Alameda Point)
When: Saturday, May 31 Time: 3 p.m.

note: Thomas is not available to run practice.

Playoff Outdoor Game
Where: Gabe East @ Booty Booty
When: Sunday, June 1 Time: 3 p.m.
After-game lot social:
Carlos Marin has volunteered to be on beer patrol. Marc will bring the chips.

This represents one of two semi-final games this weekend, with the winners facing off next week in the final. The Train Wrecks and Booty Booty tied on points during the regular season, but the 'Wreck took the number 2 seed based on goal differential and head-t0-head results.

The 'Wrecks are already missing some key players for the playoffs, so hopefully other will be able to play. Gone for sure are Thomas, Laura, Celina, Brad, and Gustavo.

Participation for official games and Saturday practice can be captured in the poll to the right. You can also leave your thoughts in the comments section.

Lock, stock, and two smoking minutes of a Guy Ritchie footballer ad

Guy Ritchie, film director and Madonna sidekick, put together a pretty entertaining Nike ad that puts you in the shoes of an upcoming Arsenal star and Dutch International. Are you Robin Van Persie?

The end and the beginning: Indoor

The indoor Train Wrecks finished off the spring season with a loss, going down 4-1. Pedro scored the lone goal with a nice run through the defense, and a fine finish off the outside of the foot.

A three-game losing streak isn't the way the 'Wrecks want to remember season, so perhaps we can focus on some of the positives to the season. A few wins, Oreste finishing 4th in the league in scoring, and nice contributions from our women 'Wrecks. Check out the stat retrospective.

Spring/Summer indoor starts this coming Friday the 30th. Brad is taking the season off to get his knee healthy. However, welcome back Robert Keller (cue up the tune to "Welcome Back Kotter").

The league schedule for the upcoming season is not up yet, but the Bladium Train Wreck team page exists. The link will be posted under the team links section on the right of the blog. It's a useful link in case I haven't posted the weekly reminder for game times.

End-o-Season doin's

End-o-Season party
Currently the planning committee is looking to have the end of the season party at the Bladium this June 21st. It's important to capture people's attendance because rental of the facility and food will be based on how many people can attend.

A poll has been set up to the right to help capture attendance. Train Wreck friends and family are all welcome.

The planning committee is looking at having the part at the Bladium sports bar from 9 'til midnight, with food catered, and access to the foosball table and free reign of the big screen. More details to come

Indoor Rec. Division Game
Where: The Bladium vs. Darkhorses
When: Friday, May 23 Time: 7 p.m.

The Train Wrecks are still fifth in the table on 9 points (4-3-1) entering into this last game of the season. With a win, the 'Wrecks would tie the Darkhorses on points for fourth place.

Reminder: Players continuing on to next season should pay the team fee by this Friday. The team fee stands at $79.50.

Practice

Cancelled

Outdoor Playoff (coming soon)
Where: Gabe East
When: June 1 Time: 3 p.m.

note: this game is not being played this weekend, but the following weekend. The playoffs involve the top four teams in the table with the semi-finals pitting the first place team against the fourth, and the second versus the third. The winner of those two matches will play the following week in the final.

Participation for official games this weekend and Saturday practice can be captured in the poll to the right. You can also leave your thoughts in the comments section.

MVP? MV-Steve

The outdoor 'Wrecks played their final regular season game this past Sunday against the Scrubs, a team that had only lost once to date. With the Train Wreck's talent pool reduced to five men, without key contributors Oreste, Brad, Blair, Diego, Robert, Andrew, and Gustavo, the team relied heavily on passing excellence, a strong unit of women, gambling tactically, and Steve (goalie mercenary extraordinaire).

For this game, no poll needed -- Steve was man-o-the-match.

In the end, the game would result in a 1-1 draw. Thomas guided in the equalizer after the Scrubs opened the scoring with somewhat of a fluke goal. However, there was a victorious feeling to the match, especially given the advantages the Scrubs were afforded.

The effort was a satisfying way to the end our 11-game season, say good bye to Celina (who has mostly likely played her last Train Wrecks game), and wish Thomas a Happy Birthday.

Up next? Playoffs. June 1 is the date reserved for playoff games, and more information will be forthcoming. Train Wrecks held the 2nd place spot going into yesterday's tie.

The worst that the Train Wrecks can finish on points is 2nd. Pending the results of the Booty Booty - Meerkat FC game, goal differential may determine a tie-breaker with Booty Booty. Going into yesterday's round, Booty Booty was 2 points behind the Train Wrecks and 2 back in goal differential and the Train Wrecks owned the head-to-head result.

Burned out and faded away

The indoor team played not-so-hot in the oh-so-hot Bladium this last Friday. The score ended up being umpteen to two, or thereabouts, as the 'Wrecks were out-everythinged (scored, played, skilled, inspired, hustled).

To add insult to injury...or wait...that's the other way around, Brad picked up a knock and looks to be out of action for a while. Get well Brad.

The Train Wrecks remain in the middle of the table with one game left, to played this Friday at 7 pm. Scores, stats, and standing provided by the Bladium.

For those of you playing the next season, make sure to get your fees in per Laura's email.

Grilled Maurader

Another successful campaign on the outdoor pitch this Sunday for the Train Wrecks. Maybe it was the weather. Maybe it was in honor of the Moms. Maybe it was because we were hungry for a win.

In the end the 2-0 scoreline didn't do the Train Wrecks justice. Though, a generous and supportive crowd and stroke of sunshine did honor the occasion.

While one might not attribute perfection to every Train Wreck effort, the two well-worked goals never seemed like they would get a response from the Mauraders. Perhaps it can be best chalked up to team fortitude. Or maybe spiced meat motivation.

It seems the team scored again even after the final whistle had blown. I missed the after-party, but kudos to Oreste for stepping up and bringing the meat and the 'Q to grill it on, to Pedro for the beers, to Ali for bringing her birthday so that Janine could bring her a cake, and Laura for the fine home inspired condiments.

Photos: (top) Celina nearly gets to a ball crossing the Mauraders net; (bottom) Thomas uses his head when applying defense.

When: Wednesday, May 7 Time: 6 p.m.

Indoor Rec. Division Game

Dog days of spring

It was another game with a tale of two halves. The first was a "bad dog" half that was simply summed up with nothing to show for against a second-to-bottom of the table team. And believe me, the "bad dogs" gotta talkin' to during the break.

But from the break the Train Wrecks came away with a revised focus and a bone to go after: score 4 goals, keep a clean sheet.

The Train Wrecks obliged. Channeling Patti LaBelle, the team got a new attitude, delivered some crisp passing, and showed signs of creativity and movement all over the pitch.

Though we won't say that the first goal was the prettiest, we could say we all had plenty of time to enjoy the strike as it skipped, bumbled, and stumbled through the defense, goal keepers arms and over the line.

Diego's leaping header made it 2-0, and probably put the 'Wrecks on a confident path to reaching the target put to them.

Amy was next up, adding to the count with a lobbing shot that looked like it was drawn up as a sketch of a missile strike by the department of defense. 3-0 and only one more goal to go.

Monica provided the cherry, with an excellent strike to the far post from the right channel. The Train Wrecks had fulfilled the Thomas prophecy as the team put this puppy to bed, 4-0.

Getting back to normal with our 100th post

So a busy travel/work week has kept me a way from updating the blog. And while the indoor team went undefeated in that absence, the outdoor team dipped into defeated territory -- a 4-1 loss to Inter. Last weeks scheduling may have been to blame (really? Friday nights?), but the good news is we're returning to more familiar ground. Here are the week's events:

The 411 on the week of 4/21

[updated time for the pick-up game on Wednesday]

Kind of an odd week for events. The outdoor game is Friday, the indoor one Saturday -- right after practice. Also for consideration....with the outdoor game Friday, who would still be willing to stay for the after-game social (around 9 p.m.)?

Outdoor pick-up game (this is not hosted by the Train Wrecks)
Where: MLK & Derby (Berkeley)
When: Wednesday, April 23 Time: 7 p.m.

Outdoor Game
Where: Gabe West @ Inter (1st in the table, 4-1-2 )
When: Friday, April 25 Time: 7 p.m. After-game host: Alex

Practice
Where: Atlantic fields (if available, otherwise go to Alameda Point)
When: Saturday, April 26 Time: 3 p.m.

Indoor Rec. Division Game

Wuttke channels Lombardi: Train Wrecks rally for victory

"The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary." Vince Lombardi said that. I'm not sure what Thomas said at halftime of yesterday's Train Wrecks 5-2 victory, but it must have been Lombardi-esque.

After a somewhat dismal first half, the 'Wrecks were down two goals to one. However in an inspired fathering at half-time the team rallied for a convincing and comfortable final score. Amy got things started in the second half from the spot. Then the flood gates opened. Gustavo provided a nice cross to Wendy to get on the board another time, and even Blair got in on the assist action, giving up a ball for Diego to latch on to and put in to the net.

For good measure, Robert finished things off with an exclamation point, perhaps at the behest great sideline encouragement from Pedro (suspended), Don, and Kevin. Or perhaps from the desire to set the stage for enjoying Oreste's after-game ceviche and Blair-hosted refreshments.

note: This coming week's Train Wreck indoor and outdoor games are not on their usual days. The outdoor team plays this Friday, and the indoor team on Saturday. Posts with details to follow soon.

No poll this week for moment of the match. When you're channeling Vince Lombardi, there are no other moments.

Comments? Leave 'em.

Directory assistance

Many professional club names include a geographic clue as to where they might be located. Manchester City plays predictably in Manchester City. Sparta Praha, well you'd guess Prague, right. Pachuca, in....wow, you're getting the hang of this, Pachuca.

But there are plenty clubs, some perhaps less popular that don't offer these clues. For instance, Botafogo of the Brazilian top flight, or Boavista of the Portugal BWINLiga -- what cities do they play in? Or even if they do offer a clue, only an experienced geographer could make sense of it. I certainly couldn't point to Catania, Italy, or Azogues, Ecuador.

But there is some help. Footiemap.com, offers a nice interactive map to help you sort out football clubs and their geography in many countries (no Argentina unfortunately). Click on the club links to get to their home pages.

Sumo Ballbusted | Samurai Bear busted

The indoor team had a reversal of fortune from last weeks loss which culminated in an 8-6 victory over the Sumo Ballbusters. The Train Wrecks never fell behind, and despite being pressured early in the second half, timely goals kept the visitors from ever catching up.

After the game several Train Wrecks (some of them still sweaty from the indoor game) were spotted at the Blair's premiere of Season of the Samurai. It was a great show and showing as the room was packed for the entertainment, not only for the documentary itself, but also for the unique insight Blair was able to provide outside the hour and a half of edited tape.

Perhaps the most interesting point in the movie, in relation to Blair's contribution to the Train Wrecks, is that he in fact is not an athlete (according to Will Cromartie). Hmmm...we never would have guessed.

Debut of the Samurai Blair

Come and support our very own Burea (Spider-Blair in Japanese) as he debuts his role for friends in the documentary about a traveling minor-league baseball team -- the Japan Samurai Bears.

Blair has reserved a space to project the film at MIG (near University and Fourth St. in Berkeley), and he's going to serve pizza and refreshments. The movie starts promptly at 7:30 p.m., so arrive early if you want food.

Blair does warn that there is LOTS and LOTS of profanity in the movie, which won't be any surprise for many of you, particularly for the defensive unit players that patrol the nets in front of him.

To get a taste, check out the profanity laced trailer.

All tongue-tied

Outdoor
A nice day. A relatively full squad. Some pretty solid play. A 2-1 lead early in the second half thanks to goals by Pedro (nice header by the way) and Diego (rumblin' bumblin' stumblin' across the goal line). It had all the makings of well deserved win over a benchmark opponent.

Somehow, however, that unravelled by way of some dubious events that, in the end, gave benefit to Meerkat FC culminating in an at the death penalty to equalize 2-2. A not-so-forgiving referee, the crossbar (twice), and ball that couldn't get it's swerve on (see Wendy's free kick) were all contributors to the conspiracy.

The tie puts the TrainWrecks at 11 points with 3 wins, a loss, and 2 draws.

Indoor
In last Tuesday's indoor game the TrainWrecks couldn't quite catch up to S.O.S. going down 6-4.

Disaster preparedness: Quakes and Fire

I just realized the home opener for the San Jose Earthquakes is this Saturday against CuauhtƩmoc Blanco and the Chicago Fire. Are people going to the game in lieu of practice?

Quick recap

Train Wrecks did the following last week:

Claimed an indoor victory over PK Ibuprofin, 9-4, last Friday.
Beat Piranha's 5-0 in Sunday's outdoor game.
Lost to the S.O.S., 6-4, in a mid-week indoor game.

How's that for quick?

Kid's play

So I've been hearing that the change of direction videos are nice, but that perhaps some of the 'Wrecks may need something with a greater degree of difficulty to also hone their advanced skills. For those of you willing to try...follow along:

Hook turn and fall down is more like it

Just fyi -- this doesn't work so well in a livingroom filled with furniture and a 6'0 aging white male trying to play the 1-2 with his cat.

My brother's best friend's niece's boyfriend heard it from his cousin's dog trainer

For those of you who like the rumor mill, here are couple of soccer gossip resources: FanNation, BBC football, and goal.com transfer zone.

Speaking of rumors.....how about this: Thierry Henry to play for the new MLS club, Seattle FC?

A mixed bag of lemons and lemonade

A couple of results from this weekend. The indoor Rec. Division team started the spring season with a 5-3 win. However in the outdoor game this past Sunday, the Train Wrecks went down to the Berkeley Jets, 3 - 1.

In the outdoor game, Diego managed the lone goal for the 'Wrecks. And while the game ended in a loss, with a less than inspired first half, there was something to build on going forward with a much improved second half.

Beer Fest
A note from Laura: In the tradition of the after-outdoor-game social, we're looking for volunteers for supplying drinks. A couple of people have stepped up to the plate for this year's games, and Thomas will be hosting the next iteration. However, more volunteers are needed. Contact Amy and Laura to get on the schedule.

The blog gets a new kit

Inspired by the new kits coming out for the national teams, I've decided to try a new look for the blog. I like this kit a bit better than the previous since it chunks the information in a bit more digestible chunks. Thoughts?

Jersey boys

Fell upon a pretty decent online store for club jerseys. I think they're a UK-based store, but they also have a US store (makes for better shipping costs). Speaking of jerseys, did anyone catch the Poland v US men's friendly this past Wednesday.?The team debuted the new away kits. What did'ya think about 'em?

Things just got more difficult

Ok, so here's the second in a series of changing direction tips. The degree of difficulty (i.e. having to avoid another moving body) seems to have been ratched up.

Galacti-tie

A nice warm Easter Sunday greeted the Train Wrecks at BTA fields in Richmond. And while all was sunny in the sky, something was askew in the match against the Galacticos. Or should I say somethings.

Like the goal posts. Like the slightly chunky field (golf-ball peppered too). Like the chippy play. Like playing down a player the whole game.

In the end, all things were equal for the both teams as a 1-1 tie will go in to the record books. Pedro provided the Wrecks our lifeline by escorting the round ball into the square goal. You could say
spider-Blair was a sort of a lifeline as well, with some very nice saves. And what can I say about the women -- 4 of them played for the price of 5.

The good thing...we're still atop the standings. Check them out on the league site.

I found some good tip videos. I'll post them from time to time. There's a whole series on changing direction. This is the first installment.

Spring indoor recreational season schedule

The bladium has the schedule up. Amy's asked Luis to change one of the dates because it conflicts with an outdoor game.

A win, but where's the conga wreck?

Perhaps Alex's words of wisdom were, well, wise (for those of you you who missed his goal celebration comments, he recommended that because of our propensity for injured players we should perhaps heed that as a harbinger for determining athletic celebrations).

So the T-Wrecks (T-Rex? A monster of a team, filled with dinosaur player?) provided another four goal performance with twine tickling from Oreste, Monica, Pedro, and Robert. And while three goals ended up in our own net, the one-goal victory wasn't as uncomfortable as it sounds.

What was uncomfortable was Amy's...um, not sure what to call it, body check? She just kinda stood there....but the 6' 2" San P soldier sure did crumble when he ran into her. It's like he ran in to a brick wall. Or a Wall-in-ator! (Get it? Amy Wallin. Wallin-ator. Like the Terminator. Anyone? Get it? Anyone?)

A welcome back to our resident artist, Celina. She was carvin' up some turf with some crafty and spritely movement. And special mention to Diego, who achieved lift off on several occasions (there's something to be said for sending a ball over the bar. The bar of the 30 ft. backstop that is). But the most honorable mention goes to Steve, who rocked it ol' school, with his slip-slide, back spring, break dance defense.

Two and oh!

Leave your highlights in the comments.

The airplane, the thumb-sucker, and the badge kisser.

So aside from the double-fist pump Brad provided after his goal, our celebrations are pretty timid. Maybe we're too modest. Maybe the league is too modest. But, if you had a celebration, either as your own or as choreographed with teammates, what would that look like?

Feel free to leave your ideas in the comments section.
